Base Resin

PBI Advanced Materials adds various fillers to super engineering plastics such as "PBI" "PEEK" "PI" "TPI", and develops materials suitable for customers’ application.

PBI (Poly Benz Imidazole) [Celazole*]

PBI is a high performance plastic developed by then Celanese Corp. sponsored by NASA (National Aviation and Space Agency) and AFML (Air Force Materials Laboratory), most highest thermo elastic heat resistive plastic in the world with 600°C or more of heat decomposition temperature, 410°C of HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) and 427°C of Tg (Glass Transition Temperature) and exhibits excellent thermal stability, resistance to chemicals, acid and base hydrolysis and temperature resistance.
At the moment, a US entity, PBI Performance Products Inc, is a sole producer of PBI raw material, and Sato Group is the licensee of the molding.

PEEK (Poly Ether Ether Ketone)

PEEK has high heat resistance as a thermo elastic resin with continuous use temperature of 260°C. Carbon fiber or glass fiber filled grades show HDT of 300°C or more. PEEK is actually used as wafer carriers in semiconductor fields and seal rings of automotive automatic mission where heat resistance and wear resistance are highly requested.
Chemical resistance of PEEK is next to fluoro polymers, furthermore, it is more ductile than fluoro polymers so that PEEK is used as production parts of hard disk manufacturing. It is also used as housing water supply parts thanks to its water-proof property.
PBI-am produces the big stocked shapes for machining by compression molding with more than 300 mm in diameter.

PI (Poly Imide)

PI (polyimide) is the generic name of a polymer compound containing imide binding. The polymer shows Tg 410°C and HDT 380°C.

PI is widely used in electrical and electronic fields because of its high mechanical strength, excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance and electrical insulating properties.

TPI (Thermoplastic Poly Imide)

Thermoplastic PI is a thermo elastic resin and the recommended use temperature by its resin manufacturer is up to 240°C. The injection molding grade is molded in amorphous state. Dimensional stability of Aurum injection molded part in amorphous state is better than that of PEEK, a half crystalline resin. When

TPI is crystallized, it exhibits higher heat resistance than that of PEEK with 315°C of HDT as natural state.

PBI-am produces stocked shapes of crystallized TPI by compression molding, being taken into consideration the heat resistance in the crystalline state.

Fillers

PBI Advanced Materials designs special grades of polymers by adding various fillers to above super engineering plastics, specializing in the needs of customers. Our main fillers are as follows.

PAN-type Carbon fiber

PAN type carbon fiber is used to enhance the strengths of base resin.

Pitch-type Carbon fiber

Pitch type carbon fiber is widely used in tribological resin grades because of its good thermal conductivity capable of reducing resin temperature during the tribological use, though enhancement of resin strengths by Pitch type is not as good as by PAN type carbon fiber.

Glass fiber

Glass fiber is used to enhance the strengths of base resin too, while carbon fiber is used when insulation property is not required as it also shows electric conductivity.

Ketjen Black (KB)

Ketjen Black is used in ESD grades.

Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (PTFE)

PTFE is used as a solid lubricant in order to obtain tribology.

Graphite (Gr)

Graphite is used as a solid lubricant in order to obtain tribology.

Isotropic Whisker

Isotropic whisker is a kind of functional ceramics. Because of its three-dimensional shape, it exhibits excellent effects not found in other composite filler when it added to resins. In particular, the isotropic whisker exhibits anisotropy relaxation effect (improvement of dimensional stability) of the molded parts, and the addition of antistatic performance effect.

Ceramic Whisker

Ceramic whisker is a kind of functional ceramics. The composite oxide shows the similar characteristics to aluminum oxide (alumina). The whisker has a high aspect ratio, low linear expansion coefficient, excellent mechanical properties such as high strength and high modulus. In particular, since the aspect ratio is large, the whisker provides a high filler reinforcement effect.
